World Bank, Aust to tackle digital divide

The World Bank President will get behind Australia in an initiative to help bridge the digital divide.

Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer and World Bank President, James D. Wolfensohn will launch the Virtual Colombo Plan (VCP) in Sydney next week.

The initiative will use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to provide widespread and affordable access to education, information and knowledge.

The VCP builds on the original Colombo Plan, the world's oldest program of bilateral cooperation set up 50 years ago to focus on economic and social development.
