Creature Labs and Motorola today announced that they have signed a deal to create wireless games based on Creature Labs' artificial life platform.
They will jointly develop and market games based around the artificial pet-nurturing games that Creature Labs is famous for. The twist is Motorola will help make these games for data-enabled handsets connected to 2nd and 3rd Generation cellular networks.
The two year agreement will see Motorola marketing games developed by Creature Labs exclusively within the wireless games market.
The games will be designed for user friendliness and will be aimed at non-traditional gamers and a greater percentage of female users, and the youth market. It may potentially provide wireless operators with a promising new form of revenue generation.
The first announced game revolves around the classic Sea-Monkeys concept, the Brine Shrimp eggs sold to children as mail-order pets from advertisements in comic books since the 1960's.
The game will begin with the birth of a Sea-Monkey creature and challenges the player to nurture the creature through various stages of life.
The game will reside on a server connected to the operator's wireless network and not inside the player's handset, freeing up the performance of the device and allowing the game to continue when the device is switched off or its batteries run flat.
The game will require the player to connect to the network periodically to ensure that their Sea-Monkeys are happy and healthy.
Newer cellular data systems such as GPRS and UMTS allow instant connectivity and permanent virtual connections that allow a user to be permanently connected to the server.
