Around 160 high tech companies from Australia and New Zealand are expected to take advantage of a new trade alliance, designed to boost their software, multimedia and IT markets.

A centrepiece of the closer ties will be the Trans-Tasman Technology Alliance Forum in Christchurch and Auckland from June 26-28.

The forum is aimed at assisting high tech exporters from both countries who want to leapfrog into third markets.

New Zealand is Australia's third largest export market, accounting for seven percent of total exports, which earned Australian businesses in excess of AU$8.5 billion during 1999-2000.

Austrade says the forum will feature a high level panel of ICT industry presenters, and expects companies to take advantage of the obvious networking opportunities.

Organisers intend to use the forum as a pilot to test the concept for application to other markets and industries.
