Telstra claims a new national dial IP service will give Internet Service Providers the ability to offer local call dialling to their customers, no matter where they're located.

"MegaPoP National will enable ISPs to buy and activate virtual ports in specific Call Collection Areas across Australia, effectively outsourcing their dial access to Telstra", Telstra's Wholesale Managing Director, Rosemary Howard said.

"The ports are available in 66 call collection areas covering the country. Telstra is offering ISPs a minimum of 10 ports."

"We believe this product has a range of benefits for ISPs looking for ways to manage their infrastructure and allow them to spend more time on their own value added offering to customers," Howard said in a statement.

The telco says the offer will allow ISPs to expand their business without substantial up-front cash outlays or a change of premises.

"Customers access the ISP's service through a global number (01983xxxx) for ease of deployment and branding. At the same time the ISP controls its brand, service offering and port to user ratios", she said.

The virtual ports will connect with a point of presence in a respective state capital. ISPs would have to install Telstra Frame Relay or ATM as the connection interface.
