With mobile phone number portablity due to be delivered to consumers in late September, Telstra has unveiled a B2B common network which it says is capable of transferring customers between carriers within miliseconds.
Ironically, the telco is expecting a rise in its own disconnection rates when the new system begins operating.
The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) is paving the way for the introduction of mobile number portability, to step up competition within the telecommunications industry.
The new regime is due to be introduced on September 25th, replacing a system where users who change carriers have to lose their existing number.
The telco says its current average "churn" rate is 1.5 percent per month, which it claims to be half the disconnection rate of its competitors.
The carrier is however, expecting an increased level of disconnection rates once MNP is delivered in September.
Telstra Wholesale will initially provide a Mobile Number Portability Common Network (MNPCN) to be used by all mobile companies.
It claims the common nework is "high tech, economical, fast and secure" and "has no known eqivalent anywhere else in the world."
"Telstra Wholesale has set up a business-class common network, to be used by all mobile carriers. With the flick of a switch a mobile user can move from one carrier to another once formalities have been completed between old and new providers," said Telstra Wholesale's Managing Director, Rosemary Howard.
"This common network is unique. In the UK, changing mobile carriers takes up to 30 days. Telstra's common network allows porting well inside the ACA's requirement of porting within hours," she said.
