Telstra's 13-hour broadband outage

Telstra's broadband service is in the news again, this time hitting the rocks with a 13-hour outage preventing BigPond Cable and ADSL customers accessing the most basic of Internet services -- email.

The blackout hit BigPond broadband users over the weekend and it's reported that email services were inaccessible for 13 hours, being restored at approximately 2.47pm on Sunday.

However, Telstra's service status page is still reporting the problem.

"Problems are being experienced with the provision of services relating to Big Pond Cable and Big Pond ADSL. Mail users are getting their mail connection closed unexpectedly and they can't reconnect. The problem is currently under investigation," it says.

Telstra has been lambasted in the last week for restricting broadband downloads on its widely regarded "unlimited" plan.

Capped at three gigabytes a month, many customers are complaining that they're being charged the same amount for an inferior service -- a service that's notorious for its problems providing email and Internet access to boot.

Broadband outages were a pretty regular occurrence for the telco giant back in March, when it blamed an overseas service provider for a string of outages that prevented BigPond broadband customers from accessing the Internet four times in as many days.

Telstra has been contacted for comment.
