Telstra goes bump in the night

Imagine being woken at two o'clock in the morning by your bleating mobile phone, to find a text message from Telstra informing you that you're now connected to their WAP service.

That's exactly what happened to one Telstra MobileNet customer who was woken from his slumber in the wee hours of the morning, only to find not one, but two text messages saying, -your MobileNet WAP service is now connected. Visit our web site at www.telstra.com/wap for details about how to set up your phone".

Telstra says SMS messages are not sent out after hours. -All messages to notify customers that WAP has been activated are sent out manually between 8.30am and 5.30pm," a spokesperson for Telstra's Wireless Multimedia Group said.

Telstra claims it is the first time they have been informed of an incident where a message has been sent to a customer after midnight.

-It's not something we like to do, send messages out after midnight," the spokesperson said.

-The only thing I can think of is that there could've been a delay with the message getting through," she said.

The telco said it would look into the incident, believing it to be a technical fault of some sort.

Recently, the Australian Direct Marketing Association (ADMA) said it would work with the telecommunications industry to cut down on unwanted marketing messages to mobile phones, otherwise known as SMS spam.

-Lets face it, we are wasting our time with any communications tool if the message falls on deaf ears. It is most definitely not in marketers' interests to annoy consumers with unwanted messages," ADMA Chief Executive Rob Edwards said in a statement.
