Telstra denies buying back customers

Telco giant Telstra has denied claims that it's buying back broadband customers with the offer of no re-connection fees and AU$20 off the first three months.

One BigPond broadband user ZDNet Australia spoke to claims two friends were telephoned by Telstra representatives asking them to reconnect to the service. -They'd not be charged a reconnection fee and would get AU$20 off the plan they chose to reconnect to for the first three months," he said.

Both Brisbane-based users claim to have been contacted within the last six weeks and declined the proposal.

-This sort of thing keeps popping back up...we've had a few people over the last couple of months saying Telstra has called them and offered them deals of this kind," Dan Warne, of broadband user Web site www.whirlpool.net.au, said.

-I can't think of why they would be doing it, it could only lead to bad press for them."

Telstra denied there was any such campaign going on to tempt ex-broadband users to reconnect.

"There's definitely no AU$20 discount offer," Telstra spokesperson Stuart Gray said.

The claims follow Telstra's unpopular decision in June to cap its previously "unrestricted" broadband service .
