Telstra ADSL down for 331 hours: source

Telstra's ADSL service was unavailable for 331 hours over two months in early 2001, according to figures leaked to ZDNet Australia.

The figures, which were allegedly compiled by ACNielson.consult and emailed to ZDNet by a third party , suggest the telco's service was unavailable for 22 percent of the time and compares with 27 outages for Telstra's cable network between August 1999 and March 2001, and 13 cable outages for Optus.

ACNeilson.consult refused to confirm that it compiled the figures, but did say that Optus@Home -is killing" Telstra's ADSL service.

"ADSL is going through the same teething problems cable went through ... but Optus@Home is streets ahead of the competition (Telstra BigPond)," senior analyst at ACNeilson.consult, Richard Gillis, said. -The gap's widening," he added.

ACNielson.consult monitors how many times ADSL upstream connectivity is down, as well as authentication server problems.

Commenting on Telstra BigPond's upstream connectivity, Gillis said glitches -haven't been happening as frequently", however, access server problems -have really been getting a lot worse over the last couple of months".

"It was going okay in January...but the wheels have started to drop off," he said.

Optus@Home, on the other hand, is up 99 percent of the time, is at least twice as fast as Telstra and when is does have -downtime" it's not down for days at a time, Gillis said.

-It [Telstra ADSL] basically drops out every day."

Telstra should be giving credits or not charging for services they haven't provided , as its acceptable to most people that there will be problems with most things in life.....but this is beyond a joke.

Stick with Optus Home and lets get some more competition going too.

So now we can all turn to Optus@Home as a competitive alternative ...

Oh. No we can't because the draconian IT policies of Australia have stifled competition in the Internet sector and the ONLY SINGLE other alternative to Telstra ADSL (i.e. Optus) doesn't have cable installed as widespread as is needed.

Would you believe there is no cable service available even in North Melbourne?

    The solution:
Sell ALL of Telstra, open up the exchanges to fair competition, and let market forces decide the winner.

Damn, I am having ADSL installed tomorrow (13 July) and paying a whopping $1367 dollars for 12 months. If their service is as bad as people are suggesting, I intend to sue for any downtime that effects my work prospects (Freelance Web Developer).

I would like to see a survey that showed how many broadband customers would stay with Telstra if given a choice. I for one would drop them in a flash if they did not have a monopoly in my area. The service is so poor that I maintain a dial-up connection as backup for the constant faults. Their email also suffers the same problems a web based email provider would be more reliable than Telstra's servers.

    Take it from me
I'm with Telstra ADSL in WA.

They are the only company offering it at an affordable rate - all others use the telstra network. They have reneged on the contract (hello 3 gb limit) and they definitely do not have anywhere NEAR a 98% uptime. At least once a week, I'll have a day of NO access, AND a day where I can connect but cannot access anywhere off the telstra websites. I'm only home to use the service 1/3 of the month anyway, so whats with the times when I'm not here?
Only 22% downtime? I dream of only 22% downtime.
Optus? anyone? Competition, where are you?

Telstra have been constantly down for days now. Even this morning I still can't get onto my ADSL connection. When it finally DOES connect, there is no data flow and the e-mail server is not available (I can't even ping it). This has been going on for over a month now and Telstra just dont want to tknow about it. When I finally connected last night at 10pm, it took 45 minutes to download 300K of virus defintions. The actual file was 2.3Mb but I gave up. This is Telstra Broadband.

Come on Telstra, when are you going to FIX the ADSL service?

And to add to the pain Telstra have capped the ADSL limit as well (100MB/day). Are they trying to drive customers away?

The statement "Optus is twice as fast" is blatantly incorrect. I have Telstra Cable, and regularly see download speeds of 500KBps+ (4000kbps+). Optus can't get near that....

While I agree that Optus is undoubtedly more reliable than Telstra, Telstra is also undoubtedly faster.

If there was a similarly priced (ie. give or take 20% of my current cost) solution such as Optus I would gladly go over. I'm paying $90 a month, for a service which in all honesty doesn't seem to be up 3 times in 10 (and thats being generous). I was paying $30/mo for a modem, admitadly slower, but while I was using it I was getting connection times to the order of a fortnight at a time, not hours at a time as it is with telstra.

I'd be willing to pay up to $150/mo for someone to offer me something similar to what I've got now, but with MUCH increased reliablity.

My Telstra ADSL service was down for 9 days in June.
The explanation was that it required a tunnel reset.
No refund or credit has been offered so far.
No apology has been offered either.
I have heard of others being out for up to 14 days due to tunnel problems.

The only problem with getting on the Telstra Hate bandwagon is it gets in the way of the facts! The reason that Telstra's Adsl is having problems is that is is over loaded, due to it being available to SOOO many people. Optus has a minute number of subscribers which are much easier to service. They also loose a lot of money doing it!

From this, many other incidents, the 3 Gig limit and the fact that my BPA cable connection went down last night (as usual), I cringe at everytime I see that bloody Telstra logo on any bill I have to pay, be it Internet or any other.

I've been told Optus @Home is really picky about where they will install the service. I live in a rented flat and apparently that's a no-no.
They should really ease up on things like that, they would gain many more customers (including myself).

I got Telstra BigPuddle cable to start with. I connected via a Netgear RP114 router to my home network consisting of two computers. I then realised that Optus offered an incomparably better service. I cancelled my service 3 weeks after installation and avoided the cancellation fee since they had changed the rules re. download limits(this was in October/November). Optus cable is faster, more stable and you can have up to five email addresses.
