Sybase Inc. is rolling out a new version of SQL Anywhere Studio that offers improved data synchronization, broader platform support and interactivity with more data sources.
With Version 7.0 of the mobile and embeddable data management suite, Sybase is aiming in part at the emerging markets for wireless devices and intelligent appliances.
SQL Anywhere Studio 7.0 features new support for Symbian Ltd.'s EPOC operating system for wireless devices and for WindRiver System Inc's VxWorks real-time operating system, said Sybase officials in California.
The upgrade, code-named Aspen, also introduces support for Microsoft's DOS operating system, used in many handheld industrial devices, as well as Linux.
Performance is enhanced through improved indexing and dynamic cache sizing, and 128-bit encryption is offered for data security, Sybase officials said.
The data synchronization component of SQL Anywhere Studio, called MobiLink, features new support for SAP AG's R/3 and other enterprise resource planning applications. It also newly synchronizes with leading wireless and e-mail communications protocols.
Sybase officials promised developer productivity improvements through the addition of a native OLE DB driver, support for Microsoft's Distributed Transaction Coordinator, and a stored procedure and Java debugger. The suite's administration tool features new Java compatibility and task scheduling and event-handling capabilities.
SQL Anywhere Studio includes the Adaptive Server Anywhere database, a lightweight deployment option for handheld devices called UltraLite, and synchronization and development software.
The upgrade is due to ship by the end of March. Pricing begins at US$399 per user.
