Study begins on pan-Australian cable

Nava Networks has commenced a crucial desktop study to select the optimal route for a terrestrial broadband network which will stretch across some of Australia's harshest terrain.

The network is part of the broadband developer's Nava-1 cable system which will link Singapore, Jakarta, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney with a high capacity submarine and terrestrial network by 2002.

Nava Networks will team with Fujitsu for the Australian cable, which will stretch from Perth to Melbourne, via Adelaide.

"The build across Western and South Australia requires careful consideration, taking into account various issues including the climate, unique terrain, sensitive cultural and heritage locations and the requirements of Nava and its carrier customer base," said Fujitsu spokesman Alan Monsted.

Nava Networks Director of Networks, Brett Worrall said the desktop study was an important step in determining which route best compliments the international building project from Singapore to Perth.
