St George, Australia's fifth largest banking group, said on Friday it had expanded access to its Web site to get around a jamming attack which blocked customers from banking online earlier this week.

The Web site was still being bombarded with messages in an attempt to deny service to real customers, but the bank said it had added capacity to restore access to customers.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and are pleased to again be able to provide the service our customers have come to expect from St George," the company said.

St George reiterated that its customers' accounts had not been touched, saying the "denial of service" attack was designed purely to clog up access to the site.

The New South Wales Police and others were investigating the attack, the bank said.
