Anti-virus vendor Trend Micro told ZDNet, the SirCam virus has -died down quite significantly on a worldwide scale," with only a small number of infections being reported today in Australia and New Zealand.
-Reports have come down to a trickle, yesterday was like a flood here in Australia," Trend Micro's Andy Liou said.
In first reports, 110 companies in Australia and New Zealand were said to have been infected by the email worm. Of those, 75 Australian businesses were infected within a 24-hour period.
According to Trend Micro, the worm was not ranked as big as other email worms such as the -Anna Kornikova" and -Love Bug" virus because a solution was found early on in SirCam's path to destruction.
-It hasn't been so successful in actually infecting," Liou said.
In terms of deviousness, however, the virus has been ranked as -deadly" because it has the potential to attach itself to a confidential business document or a personal file on a computer's hard drive, then sends it to everyone in the users address book.
-The I Love You virus was [virulent], but not as nasty," Liou said.
Trend Micro says in terms of productivity loss other viruses such as the Love Bug have caused harm. However, the SirCam virus has the potential to cause great economic loss as a company's confidential information can be shared amongst the community.
-Just shows that viruses have gone one step further, from being a nuisance to a potential threat," Liou said.
Although anti-virus vendors were able to provide protection for the virus early in its execution in to the wild, the virus was able to keep spreading because of its ability to mutate and come up with a different message.
Trend Micro believes the virus has been contained.

Strange, since I got my first email copy of it just an hour ago. Fortunately I have an up-to-date copy of Norton AntiVirus so it did not do any damage to my computer.
