SingTel, together with five other regional telecommunications carriers has built the first overland cable linking China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
The cable will be used to carry international leased circuit, Internet and voice services that are currently carried on existing submarine cables such as APCN and SEA-ME-WE 3, and is connected to other major cable systems such as the China-US cable network.
The China-Southeast Asia Cable has eight landing points: Shanghai and Guangzhou in China, Hanoi in Vietnam, Vientiane in Laos, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Using the SDH or Synchronous Digital Hierarchy technology, this cable is designed with a total capacity of 2.5 Gbps or an equivalent of 30,000 simultaneous calls, and will be self-healing when the protection routes are fully constructed in 2002.
Besides SingTel, the other partners in this cable project are China Telecom, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, Enterprise Of Telecommunications Lao, the Communications Authority of Thailand and Telekom Malaysia.
