Retailers get bionic eye

Soon to hit the shelves is a new technology developed by an Australian-based software developer Beonic, designed to track specific movements shoppers make within retail stores.

The -traffic insight" technology will add a new dimension to the collection of data for retailers, recording the amount of customers in a store as well as their presence within a defined area.

The software digitally maps results onto a floor plan, which is analysed for marketing, sales, customer service and layout strategies.

-Due to the high labour costs associated with manual data collection, it has usually been limited to a market survey over a short period to provide a representative sample of what was happening," Beonic MD Peter Cohen said.

-These assumptions can lead to unrecoverable shortcomings and the information collected can often fall short of management expectations and requirements," he added.

Beonic says the system will track which exits and entrances shoppers use; the percentage which walk right compared to left inside a store, which areas did not get used, and the amount of time shoppers stayed.

-Every time someone enters or leaves your premises, or a zone you have configured on a digital image of your floor plan, that person's presence is recorded," Cohen said.

The information is instantly relayed to a computer database for mapping and analysis.
