R&D centre gets AU$300 million kickstart

A research and development centre for innovation, science and technology is being developed in Victoria, with the aid of an AU$300 million grant from the state government.

The International Centre for Science, Technology and Emerging Industries - set up by Monash University - will enable cutting edge developments in science and technology. It will also provide partnering opportunities for industry, and the creation of jobs in Victoria.

-I encourage business and industry to join Monash University in researching, nuturing and building the emerging industries that will provide economic growth and jobs for Victorians into the future," Minister for State and Regional Development John Brumby said.

The Bracks Government's backing is in the wake of its commitment to innovation released in the state budget earlier this month.

The centre will be developed over a 10-year period, starting with the construction of a laboratory space and teaching facility at Monash, costing between AU$40 and AU$45 million.

In total, the centre will have seven buildings geared towards developments in these fields.
