Phone-bank on the blink

The Commonwealth Bank suffered a systems fault on its phone-banking service this morning, leaving customers unable to check home loans and credit card balances for about three hours.

A spokesperson for the bank confirmed there was a hardware failure in a mainframe computer, which affected the telephone banking service.

"We had the part replaced, it was up and running by 10.30 this morning," he said.

The bank's automatic teller machines, Internet banking service, and EPTPOS services were not affected by the glitch.

The problem comes almost a fortnight after Westpac's telephone banking service was hit by a software problem.

Up to 750,000 customers of its Internet banking service were also left stranded.

At the time, Westpac blamed a software glitch associated with the system used by both its Internet and telephone banking systems.
