In line with the rapidly lowering costs of overseas phone calls, OzEmail has cut its international call rates to the US and Canada to only 20c per minute.
The OzEmail service uses a series of Internet telephony gateways around the world to transmit voice over Internet Protocol (IP) from traditional phones. The user dials in to the gateway from a normal telephone and is then rerouted through the Internet to another gateway overseas where their call is routed to their final destination.
Under its current rates calls to the UK, NZ, Canada and US will be charged at 20c per minute, while calls to Hong Kong will cost 25c per minute and Japan 30c. The rate cut brings OzEmail in line with telecommunications companies such as Northgate, AAPT and One.tel who also offer low price international telephone calls.
The rate cuts have come as a result of the further integration of OzEmail into the worldwide network of parent company MCI WorldCom. And prices haven't hit the bottom yet, according to Ozemail CEO, David Spence.
"Two years ago when we launched OzEmail Phone we envisaged the 20c per minute call to the world - today I'm pleased to say it is here," he noted. "And I fully expect that in less than two years we shall be calling these destinations for under 10c"
