Optus races to sign industry code

Cable & Wireless Optus is hoping for some kudos after becoming the first telecommunications carrier to sign two industry codes on credit management and consumer complaints.

The Australian Communications Industry Forum, an industry-owned and operated company established in 1997 to assist in self-regulation, is yet to hear from Telstra and the other major players.

"There is an expectation that industry participants will...publicly declare their compliance intentions by becoming code signatories," ACIF Chief Executive, Johanna Plante said.

"All the carriers are going through the legal process of putting these codes in place," she said.

Carriers and ISPs who sign up to the codes are bound by an administration and compliance scheme to provide a mechanism for resolving industry complaints, the bulk of which historically have related to billing and customer transfer issues.

Seven consumer codes have been developed by industry, government and consumer groups over the last three years.

Breaches of these could lead to federal court action and hefty fines.
