Nokia pulls plug on Melbourne

Nokia will shut down its Melbourne Research and Development division as part of a shakeout, which will see the loss of 400 jobs worldwide.

Nokia Managing Director, Asia Pacific region Kevin Brough told ZDNet Australia, its Melbourne broadband R&D operation has been discontinued, as part of the restructuring process.

A total of 30 staff have been affected by the closure of the R&D division in Melbourne.

Brough says the move is part of the organisation's global efforts to review its broadband strategy.

In an announcement made Tuesday, Nokia revealed it would cut up to 400 jobs globally in an effort to "streamline" its high-speed Internet broadband systems division.

"We're currently helping to find jobs within Nokia for effected developers in Melbourne," Brough told ZDNet Australia.
