Netcomm takes on Telstra in broadband market

Netcomm has announced it will roll out DSL broadband services in metropolitan and regional centres throughout Australia in 2001 - pitting the company directly against Telstra.

"The number of broadband users in Australia is estimated to grow from less than 100,000 today to more than 2.3 million by 2005, and NetComm is in the ideal position to capitalise on that growth," Mr Stewart said.

The rollout of DSL broadband services by NetComm follows the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) decision to remove Telstra's monopoly over the copper wire to residential and business customers.

Telstra rolled out ADSL broadband services to customers earlier this year.

According to a company spokesperson, pricing plans for the service are yet to be finalised, however the business plan will be based on Telstra's current pricing.

Utilising the copper wires used for telephony services, DSL will enable users to access voice, video and high-speed Internet access simultaneously using the same service.
