Insurance company NRMA will cruise the information superhighway later this year, when it offers online voting at its June election.
With over two million members, the NRMA hopes that offering the optional method of voting via the Net - as well as post - will encourage more of its members to take part in its elections.
"With around two million members we are keen to encourage as many as possible to vote in matters relating to NRMA Limited and for the election of Board Directors," NRMA president Nicholas Whitlam said.
"To achieve this we are looking for ways to make voting as simple, easy and convenient as possible. We believe that an online option will appeal to many of our members."
Only 23 percent of NRMA members voted at the 1999 elections.
"Clearly there are opportunities for us to improve on this," Whitlam said.
NRMA has yet to announce who the online provider of its e-election will be but said a competitive tender process, issued October 2000, was near completion.
NRMA holds Australia's largest non-government elections and is the largest organisation in Australia to hold polls outside the Federal and State election process.
"I am sure that all levels of government will closely monitor the process and results of our elections with much interest," Whitlam said.
NRMA's online election will be subjected to strict security measures and will provide privacy and anonymity via a PIN issuance program, the organisation said.
