NEC Australia spared staff slash

NEC Australia staff will be spared the chopping block, despite a global axe that will slash 4000 jobs on the back of sagging profits.

"It's unfortunate that that's happening elsewhere," NEC Australia representative Sandy Watson told ZDNet, but -I'm pleased to say that there will be no impact here."

According to Watson, NEC's local arm is bolstered by substantial research and development in 3G and ADSL technology, -so we're actually finding that we're growing," she said.

The Japanese chipmaker's announcement that it will cull 4000 jobs or 2.5 percent of its workforce comes in the wake of a severe drop in sales which forced the company to cut profit forecasts. NEC hopes the staff reduction will help boost long-term profitability.

NEC's cost-cutting mission will force 600 staff from its Scottish semi-conductor factory out in the cold and the chipmaker will also cut the cord with 200 workers based in a factory in Malaysia, as well as about 300 employees across the board in Japan, according to Watson.

Seven hundred staff will be let go from the company's Californian operations, with the remaining positions being lost to natural attrition.
