Multimedia jobs in steep decline

As IT recruitment in Australia continues its descent, the multimedia and graphics sector has been hit the hardest by a "pre-winter chill".

The Olivier Internet Job Index for April shows a 21.8 percent decline in the number of jobs advertised in multimedia, down from 15.8 percent the previous month.

"This month has unwound all the positives for February and March. The many negative stories about the economy have had their effect. What's more ominous has been the consistent decline in jobs over successive weeks in some of the job boards that we track," said Olivier Recruitment Group Director Robert Olivier.

The company describes the job situation as a "pre-winter chill".

Internet advertised jobs fell 14.07 percent in Victoria and 11.82 percent in NSW.

The job index surveys around 90,000 'Positions Vacant' ads on commercial jobs sites.

Olivier says the combination of Easter and Anzac Day in successive weeks contributed to the downturn, comparing the period to the notoriously quiet Christmas and New Year holidays.

"With three working days lost in the month there was less work for temporaries, and with many decision-makers on holiday, some momentum would have been lost in the permanent recruiting process," Olivier said.
