Multimedia enlisted to curb road deaths

Australian drivers will be able to get behind the wheel of a 3D virtual computer game with the release of an NRMA initiative aimed at teaching young licence holders to drive safely.

The CD-Rom developed by the National Roads & Motorists' Association (NRMA) combines entertainment and learning with innovative game-based technology.

The SHIFT 2nd Gear game, available free from the NRMA, helps -L" or -P" platers to learn to drive using a 3D image of a car.

The game is a realistic way of challenging a driver to investigate a crash, produce their own news report and test their understanding of the road rules.

According to NRMA chief executive officer Rob Carter young drivers only make up for 15 percent of all drivers in Australia, however, they represent about one third of fatalities and road injuries.

-It is important young people learn at an early stage about hazard detection, decision making and risk taking and understand just how complex learning to drive is," he said.
