Called Iconimations, these animated messages are a result of a partnership between the Netherlands-based phone maker and English software development company M@gic4.
The announcement was made at CommunicAsia 2001, one of Asia's premier telecommunications and IT events. Organised by Singapore Exhibition Services, the show runs from June 19 to 22 at the Singapore Expo.
"We're in the process of incorporating the M@gic4 software into a range of Philips handsets, and are anticipating a full launch later this year," said Harry Strasser, chief officer for strategy and business development, Philips Consumer Communications.
The new feature is also expected to provide advertisers with new opportunities, as companies will be able to send embedded forms as part of the SMS message.
"We're quite excited about the potential of these new solutions, and are already working with a number of content authors," said Strasser.
Other application developments for Philips' range of upcoming mobiles include downloadable ringtones and games.
However, the company was unable to confirm when these services would be available to end-users.
