Nearly half of Australian homes have joined the Internet superhighway and subscriptions continue to rise at a heady pace, according to the latest Bureau of Statistics figures.

The ABS said 3.4 million households, or nearly 48 percent of homes, were connected to the Internet at the end of September 2000, an 11 percent rise from three months earlier.

The Internet was also increasingly popular with businesses, the survey showed, with connections rising 14 percent to 432,000 in the period.

In July 2000, 31.2 percent of Australian households accessed the Internet at least once a week, putting Australia near the top of international rankings for Internet usage.
