Lonely hearts virus hits NZ

Another love-related virus is on the run and spreading quickly, with reports of infections in New Zealand overnight. Further proof we should be thinking with our heads, not our hearts.

Anti-virus company Trend Micro says the culprit, known as Matcher.A, was placed on red alert when it was first detected in South Africa last night. It then headed to Europe, the United States and landed in New Zealand in just one hour.

The Trojan worm, otherwise known as 'Bugger', disguises itself as a love-matching tool, tempting users to run the attached file. The email has the message: "Want to find you love mates!!! Try this its cool...Looks and Attitude Matching to opposite sex.

The virus, which comes attached to an email with the subject 'Matcher', targets only Windows users.

Trend Micro received 20 confirmed reports of the virus in New Zealand. Australia managed to get off lightly with only one sighting this morning.

"We were kind of shocked by the reports in New Zealand, there were no reports in Australia until this morning,

"It looks like Australia managed to escape most of the damage due to the fact that this virus spread overnight and most people were at home in bed," a Trend Micro spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, 1000 infections have been reported in South Africa and over 5000 computers have been infected in the United Kingdom since its release.

Designed to spread quickly, vendors say the virus will not damage a computer, however, it can overload mail servers by sending itself to everyone in the victim's address book.
