Hutchison Telecomunications (Australia) has contracted with Ericsson to build an AU$830 million third generation mobile network covering the major Australian capital cities.

"The agreement provides for the supply of a wideband CDMA radio access network, IP core network and transmission technologies, advanced network management systems, network operations and a number of key network platforms to enable high quality 3G services," Hutchison said in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange.

"Funding for the network will be underpinned by the cash equity of AU$1 billion to be provided by the company and Telecom New Zealand to the 3G business," it said.

Hutchison is about 58 percent owned by Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa.
