The Commonwealth Government Online-Progress Report has been released by Senator Ian Campbell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.

'The Progress Report documents the strong progress made by the Commonwealth Government in bringing information and services online,' said Senator Campbell.

Senator Campbell also predicted the year 2000 should see Australia leap to near the top of the world egovernment rankings with the roll out of the Australian Business Number and computer price reductions associated with the abolition of the wholesale sales tax as part of the New Tax System.

'Over 80% of surveyed Commonwealth agencies are on track to meet the Prime Minister's Investing for Growth statement to have all appropriate Commonwealth services online by 2001.

Senator Campbell also highlighted the Government's work to resolve issues such as authentication and security. 'However, we must continually reassess our government online strategies for ways to better serve all Australians wherever they live and work,' he warned.

'Notwithstanding the excellent progress so far, all Government agencies must think creatively to develop more high value, user friendly, and integrated services-breaking down the barriers between government and the individuals and businesses it serves.'
