Hoping to capitalise on the pre-Christmas shopping trade, local portal Excite has relaunched its Shopping Channel and partnered with a range of local merchants.

The Shopping channel features seven department stores and includes a range of prominent merchants including Wishlist, Bing Lee, Hot Games, Chaos Music, The Shop.com.au, and OzBooks.

According to Excite's Joanna Finlay, "Our online research reinforces Australians eagerness to buy online, and combined with the pre-Christmas season, the climate is ideal to launch Excite's new Shopping channel".

Excite's statistics are based on internal research which is claimed to show that 64% of Excite Australia's users had made an online purchase, with nearly half (45%) buying goods and services from Australian web sites.

Wishlist.com.au was the first merchant to sign a content deal to provide Excite's online shoppers with access to its site as well as exclusive product offers.

According to wishlist.com.au's CEO, Huy Truong, "Both brands are looking at ways to add value to the online shopping experience and each of us brings something unique to the party"

Excite's new Shopping channel will allow the user to browse, search, look and read about the book or game they are considering buying, with the final payment of the product then carried out via a link to a transaction url at the partners site.
