Ericsson has announced the formation of a separate company focused entirely on Bluetooth wireless technology.
The Swedish mobile phone and network infrastructure company says a separate company will allow it to put more effort into licensing its Bluetooth intellectual property and radio module, at the same time strengthening its position in the nascent Bluetooth industry.
The company, yet to be named, currently has 100 employees.
Bluetooth technology enables short-range wireless communication among cell phones, pagers, handhelds, notebooks and other portable devices.
Ericsson is one of the founders of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, which now includes more than 2,000 companies.
