End of the Global Freeway

Australia's free Internet Service Provider Global Freeway is rumoured to have been reduced to rubble on Monday, with the Web site down and staff told not to come back the following day.

A message has been posted on the site saying, "Global Freeway is currently experiencing major network difficulties."

One source - which preferred to remain anonymous - told ZDNet Australia, staff had been told to leave the company on Monday and severance pay had not yet been issued.

According to the source, the ISP has lost over AU$60 million in a 6-month period.

The source also claimed Global Freeway's problems stem from a AU$50 million debt owed to telecommunications provider, Global One.

In a company statement, Global One confirms it terminated network services to Global Freeway on 3 March 2001, which were used to support Globalfreeway's Internet and email product offerings.

Furthermore, Global One is owed an undisclosed sum from Global Freeway for the provision of these services.

"It was only after exhausting all other reasonable avenues to resolve the matter that we decided to take this step," a Global One spokesperson said.

"While Global One has no legal obligation to do so, we have advised Global Freeway that we will continue to provide their customers with limited email access at no charge until 14 March 2001, and Global One reserves all of its rights to take action against Globalfreeway."

A Global Freeway spokesperson was not available for comment.

Global Freeway has been suffering technical problems since September 2000, which has left 70,000 regional and rural customers without access to the ISP.

Global Freeway is the last free Internet Service Provider in Australia. Its collapse would effect over 210,000 subscribers across the country.

I am really angry about GlobalFreeway closing down!

I am going to be one of 70000 people outside the "Eastern Seaboard" without a free ISP. with other free companies like GoConnect only caring for the Easterners, Perth and Regional people in other states will never have a chance to access free internet (Other than FreeOnLine and TPG Niterider).

FreeOnLine would be the only choice for these people in Adelaide and Perth, as well as TPG (after 10pm - 5am WST)

With Internet plans going up, People will not have a chance to go on the Internet. Shame on GlobalFreeway and I wish that one company will give free internet to all people in Australia, NOT JUST THE EASTERNERS!!

Globalfreeway claimed to be changing to the UUnet system. This is a scam as this is how it works

To become your own NATIONWIDE ISP your fee is ONLY $25 per week. There will NOT be a set up fee, a contract, or any equipment to buy.
and this is what you can sell under YOUR OWN COMPANY NAME when you BECOME YOUR OWN NATIONWIDE ISP:
You will be able to sell every Internet service available under your own company name:
    Nationwide dial up

This is not the same as reselling. You are your own ISP - yourdomain.net and you provide services as yourdomain.net (or whatever you decide to name your organization). Your customers do not communicate with UUnet - or even know about us unless you decide to share this information with them. We help you mask the route through us. Almost overnight, you will become an ISP with local dial-up access coverage in over 36 states, Canada, and Japan, United Kingdom, Australia, and Hong Kong - and of course, you may host websites for anyone in the world.

a check with UUnet or ezzi.net dial up points will show the same as GFs dial up

I can only say that you get what you pay for. Nothing can be supplied for free, and if you go for the cheapest option you are likely to get burnt.

Those who used Global Freeway should be happy with the time they did get.

    now shut the **** up!
    globalfreeway is working fine.
and globalfreeway need's it's funding or it can't be free.
and anyway reselling accounts for another ISP is NOT what globalfreeway does.
    lol $25 /month.
    what bullshit.
go ask all the isps how much it costs.
    go ask UUNET.
man. stop bullshiting all of u.
and run the backweb client and double click on it in the icon tray ...
it only loads ads every 30mins (usually everyone month).
    one small ad, every month.
    is that MUCH to ask?
u people should be ashamed of yourselves, dissing globalfreeway like that.

    ...............
    GLOBALFREEWAY rocks
    ...............

there is nothing to complain about,
i also have been frustrated at globalfreeway taking a long time to open up again.
but, globalfreeway is now changing their web site design.
and globalfreeway needs FUNDING to run their free service.
so run the bloody ad client or globalfreeway will die.

If globalfreeway dies, the end of 'free' isps will happen...

You cannot save GlobalFreeway, so SHUT UP! Global Freeway is dead, there's nothing you can do about it. I know someone who worked in GlobalFreeway, and he got retrenched WITHOUT severance pay, and GlobalFreeway cannot be saved. Get GoConnect (that's what I did!)

And for some reason i never got ads with globalfreeway. did neone else have this problem? actually its not really a problem...

I first ordered a start up cd in febuary 2000 and have still not recieved the cd this shows the poor organization of the company, i am hardly surprised that global freeway has come to its end.

I was also a Global Freeway customer. I did not mind the ads that came on once every blue moon, and yes it was a bit slow, but for free, I wasn't complaining. My complaint comes now. When we first experienced difficulty loggin onto Global Freeway, I was unsure whether it was their server or my computer, so I rang them to find out. I too was told that it was just some 'minor difficulty' and that it would be up and running by the following Monday. (I rang on the Wednesday) When it wasn't working on the Monday, I assumed it would just be one more day, then it became a week, then two, then three. I gave up. If the people at Global Freeway can't even tell their clients the truth, then no wonder they have gone down. They could have warned clients that this was happening, and at least giving them some warning that they would not have access to the internet. For people like me, I rely on the internet to get a lot of my information for university. I now pay for the internet, and it's wonderful. I know that I will always get on, and it probably even ends up costing me less as I don't have to reconnect every hour (like you used to with Global Freeway) And I know that if I ring the cmpany I am with, I will not get some fake story, but actually get to talk to someone who cares about their customers! To Global Freeway, congratulations, not only did you create major problems for all the people who connected to you, but you lied to them too. Well done!

Global Freeway was a joke!!! ...Anonymous -- 27/07/01

Global Freeway was a joke!!! Why did they sponser a musican group when they couldn't keep the company afloat. Poor business decisions if you ask me. It is not as if they needed more subscribers they had 210,000. It was probably all just a big scam for the company directors to make money.

I was a user of this free service and very dissapointed that Globallfreeway has ceased.
As the secretary for the Newcastle Motor Neurone Disease Support Group it was very good to have a free service that could be used nto research fpr MND sufferers.
I am very dissapointed that when I contacted Globalfreeway I was told a pack of lies about the new connections that were taking place and that I should be reconnected in about two weeks.
Our group can not afford to pay out costs for a service provider therefore no more research papers go into out news letter givinghope to the MND patient.

Bring back free Dial-Up, please. Anonymous -- 02/01/09

It's been years, it's about time someone fired up free dial-up.
