Compaq is expected to announce on Thursday that it has won the contract for the world's largest supercomputer, the Financial Times reported.

The newspaper said Compaq, the world's largest personal computer maker, had won the contract -- estimated to be worth US$100 million - beating Sun Microsystems.

The contract is to be awarded by the US Department of Energy and one of the supercomputer's duties will be to monitor the US stockpile of nuclear weapons.

"It will use several thousand microprocessors and will be housed in a facility that is the size of five football fields," a senior Compaq executive told the newspaper.
