Cisco Systems Australia is in the process of 'identifying' which staff will lose their jobs as part of its global downsizing.
Cisco would not disclose how many staff are currently under review but said it was focusing "more energy and attention" on the bottom five percent who are always the first to go.
Cisco announced earlier this month that 5000 full-time jobs and 3000 temporary and contract workers will be slashed globally.
"Management have been asked to look at the performance of staff," a Cisco representative told ZDNet.
Staff whose performance isn't up to scratch are currently being placed under management review, which will give them a certain amount of time to improve performance.
"If they haven't lifted their game [by them], plan B takes place," the spokesman said.
Cisco, with a local team of about 500, anticipates finding out how many staff are for the chop "fairly shortly".
"I assume it will happen in the next couple of weeks," the spokesperson said.
"I imagine they'll look at all the [states and territories] and look at where the growth markets are as well as what the profitable departments are and who are the people performing and who aren't."
When an under-performing member of staff is identified a process is put into place to help them get up to speed, according to Cisco.
This involves meeting with management, identifying areas that need improvement, setting a benchmark and a date for review.
