His sentence was increased from nine to 12 months in jail, and a S$10,000 (AU$10,852) fine was added.
In passing the stiffer sentence, Chief Justice Yong Pung How said that sexual predators who use the Net to find underaged girls are "one of the dangers of technology," and should be deterred.
The defence for 45-year-old Tay Kim Kuan had argued that the girl had encouraged his client to meet her. Tay, he said, was not an unscrupulous man out to exploit the girl. Instead, the girl shared "lurid details of her sexual exploits," after they met in the Singapore 30+ chatroom, "and they festered in his mind until he succumbed to temptation."
However, CJ Yong said: "What would a 45-year-old man be doing on a chatline with a 14- to 15-year-old girl? Telling her fairytales? Reading her the Bible or Quran?" The CJ allowed that "it may well be that she's a wanton girl. But the law does not provide any excuse."
A sentence by an English court, which the defence had put forward as "some useful guidance" was also rejected.
"It's a different culture altogether," the CJ said, adding that one would usually multiply a sentence imposed by the English courts two-and-a-half times to apply it in Singapore.
The defence brought up a local case, where an 18 year-old boy was given 15 months of probation by District Judge Seng Kwan Boon after having sex with an underaged girl.
"Maybe he should be put on probation," The Straits Times reported the CJ saying of Judge Seng.
Tay's was the first time a case of sex with a minor had gone to the High Court.
Two other men, who had sex with the same girl, are due to be sentenced. Another man, who tried to blackmail her into prostitution, will also be sentenced.
