Telecoms group Cable & Wireless Optus' XYZ unit on Monday entered the wholesale digital subscriber line (DSL) market, which delivers high speed data services over the existing copper telephony network.

Telstra, which owns most of Australia's telecommunications network, launched its service late last month and was ordered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to give rivals network access so they could set up their own DSL services.

C&W Optus said it has rolled DSL out at 50 telephone exchanges and will later double that number, focussing on exchanges where corporate and large enterprise businesses are located.

"Our DSL capabilities will allow us to expand our access strategy - to provide more cost effective services to our customers and to grow new markets for high-speed access in the future," said Stephen Beynon, managing director of data and business services.

C&W Optus is Australia's second largest telecoms group and is majority owned by Cable & Wireless Plc.
