CSIRO Livestock Industries has developed the satellite-based pasture management tool to measure feed and how fast it grows in pastures.
In conjunction with the technology, a Web site developed by Agriculture Western Australia and the Department of Land Administration will present average growth rates of pastures for each region.
The pilot will test both the delivery of information to farmers and how successfully the information can be utilised.
-This will be a test year for us, to see how the technology performs and to make improvements where necessary. We will be assessing the use of the information by farmers," CSIRO project leader Dr David Henry said.
The satellite technology passes over the southern Western Australia agricultural area daily, creating images of both visible and invisible light from the earth's surface, including vegetation.
According to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, the information can help farmers make decisions such as grazing rotations, feed budgeting and fertiliser application.
Farmers can view and purchase the information online via the SkyView WA Internet site.
Test sites are also underway in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.
