Opportunity International Australia, a non-profit aid organisation, and local online education resource provider Hyperstudy.com are planning to launch a Web site with a mission -- www.solvepoverty.com.
Proceeds from the site will be used to "establish online learning centres in developing countries," a source close to the project told ZDNet Australia.
Solvepoverty.com is inspired by www.thehungersite.com -- the funds of which go towards donating free food to the United Nation's World Food Program. By clicking on the site, surfers raise funds for 'free food' from the site's sponsors.
Using thehungersite's successful formula, solvepoverty.com is currently working with some "fairly significant global organisations," in sponsorship deals.
Organisers hope surfers will support the site, and that in turn it will generate funds for Opportunity International -- which provides loans to help poor people start and expand their own small enterprises.
The site, which is believed to be in beta at the moment, will be officially launched in September.
It is hoped that the first online learning centre will be operational in Manila by October. A further five centres will be rolled out in the Philippines by the end of the year if the site is successful.
Opportunity International said it was "too premature" to comment on its up-coming charitable site other than to say the site is being currently revised. "We don't want to run with it until it is right," a spokesperson said.
