Australia Post closes KeyPost

The transition into the Internet services market appears to be proving a difficult one for Australia Post, with the announcement that it will cease to offer its electronic key and certification service, KeyPost, from the 1st of August.

Australia Post announced its plans to close the service in a statement emailed to customers late last week. The statement said that the service '...has not met expectations and its growth and take up rate have been less than we expected'.

KeyPost offered public electronic key and certification services to assist businesses and individuals to provide identification and certification while on the Internet. Certification authorities are an important part of the electronic economy as they provide a method to authenticate identities in the anonymous online environment.

Australia Post said that it is currently attempting to find another certification authority to take over its operations, however should it fail to find a suitable partner that its customers will receive a full refund.
