Hong Kong-based Internet service provider Asia Online has slashed another 33 jobs, or 19 percent of its staff.

The positions axed were mainly in the company's systems integration unit as it had recently bought another company to undertake such work, an Asia Online spokesman said.

Another eight jobs lost were mainly clerical as the company's Hong Kong headquarters in the prime Central district will be consolidated with its operations office towards the eastern end of the island.

"These moves are part of an overall plan the company embarked on late last year to accelerate its path to profitability through a more focused range of services," Asia Online said in a news release.

Asia Online's latest move comes amidst the wave of job cuts by dotcom companies worldwide as they seek to streamline their operations.

The cuts reduce the company's worldwide staff to fewer than 570 people and its Hong Kong workforce to 140. In November, Asia Online said it sacked 56 employees in Hong Kong, before which the company had employed 914 staff. In December, there were reports of further cuts.
