.info targets Australian trademark holders

Despite only one percent of its registrations for the top-level domain name coming from Australia, domain name registry Afilias is adamant that the country is a pretty important market for the .info space.

Roland LaPlante, chief marketing officer at Afilias, said that trademark holders in Australia have jumped on the opportunity.

Registrations have come from 60 countries, with 52 percent from Europe, 40 percent from North America, and five percent from the Asia Pacific region (of which one percent is made up of registrations from Australia).

The first phase of registration for the top-level domain name .info ends Monday. Dubbed the "sunrise phase", organisations worldwide have had the opportunity to register the trademarks and servicemarks they own. LaPlante said companies were asked to provide the exact trademark they wanted to register, the country in which it was registered, the date it became of national effect, and the registration number.

He said there has been a tremendous number of problems for trademark holders over the past couple of years, such as cybersquatting, and it was hoping this would help reduce these issues. From September 12 the general public will be allowed to register .info domain names.
