Optus has announced the launch of its two-way broadband satellite Internet service called -Skyblaster" to go hand-in-hand with its existing broadband cable and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) capabilities.

-Regardless of geography, our business and education customers will now be able to access high-speed communications services," Optus managing director data and business services Chris Hancock said.

The telco has been trailing the technology since Febraury 2001.

The -Gilat Skyblaster" technology utilises Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) equipment, which enables two-way connectivity between a central hub and dispersed areas throughout the country.

The equipment consists of a small satellite dish connected to a VSAT terminal, similar in size to a video recorder.

It will provide content delivery speeds of up to 52.5 Mbps, according to Optus.

The carrier says its satellite broadband service will target education, government and corporate markets.
