Users win respite from virus attacks

Global virus activity captured by secure e-mail services company MessageLabs in November slid to half the October figure, the company said.

MessageLabs said in a statement it had intercepted 1,672,912 viruses in October, a figure which fell to 857,453 last month. The November result is the lowest since April this year.

Virus reports leapt from 1,016,421 in September to the year to date's peak in October, due most likely to the prevalence of two highly contagious viruses, Bugbear and Opaserv, released at the end of September.

The virus most stopped by MessageLabs was Klez, which has been high on the infection list of most anti-virus companies since it was released last year. Recently, Bugbear has taken over top spot on many charts, with Symantec and Sophos listing it number one, but other companies, such as Panda and Central Command, list Klez as the most virulent virus last month.
