Telstra ADSL users blocked from Symantec site

A suspected localised DNS (domain name server) has been preventing Telstra ADSL users in parts of Queensland accessing Symantec's antivirus Web site since late last week.

The problem came to light yesterday when a user complained about being unable to access the site to manually download daily antivirus definitions for several days.

The user was blocked from all Symantec Web sites but not any other sites on the Net.

Symantec technicians initially suspected an old virus that attempts to block access to antivirus sites, however, were unable to find any trace of it.

It was not until attempts were made to ping and trace the Symantec Web site from the user's computer that the problem came to light.

Symantec's sites are hosted in Japan, however, access to the server timed out after being routed to BigPond.

Telstra BigPond ADSL technicians are attempting to trace the problem and say they hope to have it fixed by the end of the week.

In the meantime users with the latest version of Symantec's LiveUpdate application are still able to use it for weekly definition updates.
