Symantec's Australia and New Zealand managing director John Donovan says although there's no real difference between provisioning managed services from Australia or one of the company's overseas SOCs, Australian corporations feel "more comfortable" with the idea of keeping security related management in the country.
Charlie Johnson, vice-president of worldwide Symantec security services, flew in to Sydney to launch the new facility.
Speaking to ZDNet Australia , Johnson said that Symantec's Australian customers were demanding the establishment of an Australian SOC. This despite the fact that Australian corporations had already successfully outsourced their security management to Symantec's US based centers.
"We actually managed a company from Melbourne and two from Sydney over the last 18 months," he said.
However, after an initial proof of concept phase, the clients wanted to see the work shift to an Australian-based SOC.
"They want to feel comfortable by giving it [security management] to someone that they trust in the local market - it's just as easy to manage it out of Alexandria. but people want that degree of comfort and trust," he told ZDNet Australia.
The centre is designed to provision the company's managed security services, such as firewall and intrusion detection system monitoring, as well as Symantec's traditional business, anti-virus systems.
