Microsoft silent on Windows Vista patch

Microsoft has released two patches on its Web site for Windows Vista, but has not made them available via the Windows Update process.

The software giant also would not comment on the rumours the quietly released fixes were related to a yet-to-be-announced Windows Vista SP1 launch.

One hot fix is considered a performance update. Designated KB938979 this update addresses a variety of media and photo-related issues, including the inability to edit photos in the raw file format from Canon EOS 1D and Canon EOS 1DS cameras.

The other hot fix is also media related, though KB938194 also addresses problems experienced by the print spooler and when the Windows Vista machine goes to sleep with an active Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection.

In an e-mail to CNET News.com yesterday in the US, a Microsoft representative said "the two updates (KB938194 and KB938979) will be available on Microsoft's download center today and broadly available via Windows Update in the near future."

Many have interpreted "the near future" to mean the next Patch Tuesday, which is scheduled for August 14.

As for Windows Vista SP1, Microsoft wouldn't comment directly except to say: "Since Windows Vista launched, we have continued working with partners to improve overall device coverage and application compatibility."

The Worst Release From Micro$oft Ever Anonymous -- 11/08/07

I have never been so unhappy with a software purchase! After buying an HP laptop with Vista Home Premium on it, I was shocked to find is can't join a domain. Insane!

So I was extorted to buy an AnytimeUpgrade for $159 which is useless until my disk arrives in the mail. They wanted $7 to mail a $0.20 CD that can take up to 10 days to be delivered!!! Why didn't this come with the HP laptop and why didn't I get 2nd day delivery for the $7 like EVERY other company does.

I should have bought from Amazon... they make the download available immediately from their website at no charge.

I'm sorry, but for you not to know that HOME (the word home is a huge hint) Premium can't join a domain is not microsofts fault. With just a little reading you would have found this out, or your salesman should have told you. In most retail stores there are charts that clearly show the differences in the product. Maybe you should blame your IT guy if he recommended the system.

And this was different than Windows XP Home in what way?

I am an rpg gamer, I bought a compaq with intentions of playing some new games and replay some of my older games. Unfortunately windows vista will not even let me install ANY of my older games. I have purchased 2 "new" games designed (suposedly) specifically for vista that I can't even get to install. I have been told by many that if I want to play "those" games that I have to purchase windows xp edition, or wait until sometime next year for microsoft to get the "bugs" out or their so called perfect windows vista....

The next generation Customer Support -- 31/08/07

Love seeing the comments from a generation that hasn't gone through a couple of major revisions of M$ OSs. I will say this: my limited experiences with Vista has got me studying my @$$ off to finish up my Cisco certs and get the hell away from the desktop end of things and lusers.
