Latest e-mail scam targets National Australia Bank

In what has become a weekly event, Australian consumers have been targeted by another e-mail scam -- the latest targets National Australia Bank (NAB) customers.

The latest scam uses the same, grammatically incorrect message as previous scams that have targeted St. George and Westpac customers.

"Dear valued customer," it reads. "Our new security system will help you to avoid frequently fraud transactions and to keep your investments in safety."

The e-mail encourages recipients to click a link in the body of the message which takes them to a site that mimics the NAB Web site. Unbeknownst to the user, the site they are logging in to is not an official bank Web site, but a "ghost" site set up to capture users login and password details.

The latest scam comes the day after Westpac launched an awareness campaign designed to educate users about the scams, to help them to avoid being stung.

In an e-mail sent to its customers, the bank described the scams and provided less tech-savvy users with tips for staying clear of this type of fraud. "Never provide personal or security related details, including our 8 digit customer ID or your password in response to an e-mail, even if it appears to have originated from Westpac," it read.

The bank will follow up the e-mail through "multiple channels" including newspaper advertisements.
