Is Klez really slowing for Aust businesses?

Industry pundits are hoping that infection is on the decrease, after April turned out to be a tough month for Australian businesses hit by the rampant Klez worm.

Andrew Gordon, managed services architect at anti-virus software vendor Trend Micro, said calls had dropped off this week and it had taken Klez off its medium alert, although the worm was still considered as being a high-risk, damaging one.

Gordon said Australia/New Zealand ranked sixth worldwide for infection rates, behind countries such as the US, UK and South Africa.

-We actually saw more infections after the main thrust of the virus, rather than in the first couple of days," Gordon said.

Anti-virus software vendor Sophos has estimated that Klez.g and Klez.h were responsible for 77.8 percent of all virus infections during April. Klez.h has also hit number three on security firm MessageLabs all-time virus list, with more than 315,000 infected messages intercepted.

Security experts have characterised the rapid spread of Klez.h as a sign of lax security measures among corporate and home e-mail users. -The success of Klez.h is strong evidence that computer users are failing to keep their antivirus software up to date," said Stuart Palmer, managing director at Sophos' Australian branch.

“The success of Klez.h is strong evidence that computer users are failing to keep their antivirus software up to date,” said Stuart Palmer, managing director at Sophos’ Australian branch.

The fact is our company updates there anti-virus software everyday and the Klez still got through. You must remeber that your company provides fixes to exsisting problems rather than being proavtive and stopping the virus before it reaches the desktop. Your company days are numbered as people will soon realise that firewalls and routers stop viruses before they enter the network. Making the need for a fix irrellevant.
