Australian smartcard operator Intellect has bagged a AU$20 million deal in Europe, supplying over 15,000 smart-card terminals and hand-held mobile payment systems to banks, police services and other organisations in Austria.

The Austrian Payment Systems Services (APSS) -- with whom Intellect has struck this latest deal -- has been a corporate client of Intellect for six years.

This is our largest contract in Austria," Intellect director Ross Leighton said. "The APSS has begun a nationwide rollout of [standardised Intellect] platforms."

The deal will see APSS supply Intellect IPT2000 smart card-capable terminals to Europay Austria (EPA) -- the company responsible for supplying banks with the Austrian Eurocards/Mastercards, the national Maestro/Cirrus cards and private banks cards.

Furthermore, the Austrian police service will be taking in excess of 1000 mobile handheld devices with the same functionality as the IPT2000 terminals -- allowing police officers to make "any transaction, anywhere at any time," Leighton said.

The deal, which will see Intellect's installed base in Austria top the 40,000 mark by the end of the year, will also supply terminals to petrol stations, retailers, railway stations and post offices.

Leighton claims that 65 percent of Intellect's revenue comes from the European market.

"It is a sophisticate market," Leighton said. "The barrier to entry being a high level of secure architecture," which Leighton added, has been Intellect's background since 1989.
